The Young Leadership Program (YLP) at The Island School provides young people in South Eleuthera with opportunities to build relationships with mentors and develop professional and life skills.
Earlier this month, we hosted the Young Leadership Retreat, a transformative experience that brought together young people for a meaningful period of learning, leadership development, teamwork, and personal growth.

Set in the natural environment of The Island School, the retreat gave students the opportunity to step away from their everyday routines and fully engage with one another while building important life skills.
Throughout the retreat, students participated in a variety of activities that challenged them to think critically, communicate effectively, and work together as a team. One of the highlights was spending time outdoors exploring the natural environment. Students took part in field activities that allowed them to connect with the land, appreciate the importance of environmental stewardship, and better understand the ecosystems that make the island school and wider community unique.
The retreat also included leadership workshops and group exercises where students worked together to discuss ideas, solve problems, and reflect on what leadership means to them. Through activities such as creating presentations, writing goals, and discussing ways to overcome challenges, students were encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones and take on new responsibilities.

A major focus of the retreat was helping students develop confidence in themselves and their abilities. They were encouraged to support one another, listen to different perspectives, and understand the value of teamwork. By working together in small groups, students learned that strong leadership is not only about leading others but also about being able to communicate, cooperate, and encourage those around them.
The YLP Retreat is tied into the Young Leadership Program’s larger mission of preparing young people for future opportunities in leadership development. Students continued building skills connected to marine conservation, sustainable living, and ocean experiences. Students also worked toward earning their open water scuba certification, allowing them to develop diving skills, build confidence in the water, and gain a greater understanding of ocean safety and marine environments.

These experiences help students understand the importance of protecting the environment while gaining practical knowledge that can support future careers and personal growth.
Overall, the retreat was a successful and rewarding experience for everyone involved. Students left with stronger friendships, greater confidence, a better understanding of leadership, teamwork, environmental responsibility, and the value of earning their open water certification. The YLP Retreat continues to be an important part of developing the next generation of leaders in South Eleuthera.
