It’s been just over a week since our Fall 2024 students joined us and what an energetic start it has been! This enthusiastic group of fifty-one has jumped right into their studies with remarkable passion and excitement, making an impressive impact from day one.
On the first morning of each semester, a cherished tradition occurs: students, staff, and advisors all come together for a sunrise snorkel. This early-morning expedition leads them to the intriguing site of a shipwreck just offshore from our campus, marking the beginning of their 100-day journey with a blend of exploration and camaraderie.
The students had the opportunity to connect with various members of our vibrant community, from the young children at the Elementary Learning Center and Deep Creek Middle School to interns and researchers from the Cape Eleuthera Institute, as well as their Semester teachers and mentors. This sense of community continued to grow the following day through campus tours, where students met key figures such as the kitchen and farm staff, further acclimating them to their life for the coming semester!
As the semester kicked off, students dove straight into their curriculum. Divided into two groups, the first embarked on a four-day kayak expedition, while the second group plunged into Scuba Week. After their respective adventures, they swapped roles, ensuring that every single student had the chance to experience both exploring the island via kayak and the achievement of scuba certification.
Completing an open-water diving certification early in the semester is crucial for our hands-on learning approach. Students will use these skills to explore the marine environment and further develop a sense of place, able to literally dive into their curriculum.
Our Fall 2024 students have an exciting journey ahead of them, and we are confident that this group is going to succeed in their endeavors throughout the semester. As they immerse themselves in the curriculum and kick off their research projects, they will continue to grow as learners, researchers, and members of a tight-knight community.
