The Island School has been part of Megan Sweeting’s DCMS11, life for as long as she can remember. As a child, her mom was an employee of the School, and her older sister, Nikki, was part of DCMS’s first graduating class in 2003. When it came time for middle school, attending Deep Creek Middle School was an easy choice.

While education was always an important part of Megan’s life, it wasn’t until attending DCMS that she could understand the bigger impact of her educational journey. During her time as a DCMS student, she learned the importance of being a well-rounded individual. Alongside her classmates, she cultivated skills like integrity, leadership, kindness, and responsible citizenship.

One of the highlights of her DCMS journey was doing community outreach projects with her Semester buddies. She loved getting to know the older students and learning with them while merging a rigorous academic experience with real-world issues. By Grade 9, Megan knew she wanted to attend boarding school in the US. She took advantage of the guidance and support that DCMS provides through its boarding school program and was accepted to and attended Perkiomen School in Pennsylvania.

“The boarding school experience was the cherry on top of my DCMS experience because it really did change the trajectory of my life completely. I was in a position to receive well from the experience and not be closed off. At DCMS we were always encouraged to meet new people, be open, learn new things, and try new things. It’s something that has stuck with me since then.”

Post-boarding school Megan went on to attend the University of the South, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2019. The following year, she earned her master’s degree from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University.

Today, Megan is an Investment Associate for the Dartmouth College Investment Office, helping to manage the college endowment of over $8 billion. She works on the Real Assets Team and is involved in the investment selection and monitoring of their real estate and renewables portfolios. This includes transitioning much of their portfolio from traditional fossil fuel investments to investments in renewable energy.

“I really mean this in such a sincere way – DCMS and the boarding school program completely changed my life. I’m so grateful for the education and the different things I’ve been able to accomplish so far, and I know that I would not have been able to do any of it had I not attended DCMS. It really propelled me into this amazing space.”

As with all Island School programs, the Deep Creek Middle School offers our local middle school students the opportunity to follow a hands-on educational model, allowing for growth beyond what a traditional classroom can provide. Learn more about DCMS here.
