Imagine the pure zeal of the first day of school for every child after nearly two years of online learning! Despite the many global challenges faced by the COVID-19 pandemic including learning, the Deep Creek Primary School and The Island School partnership feels stronger than ever, and it is slated to be a strong finish to the academic year with all hands and resources on deck.
As we enter the New Year many of us are looking for easy eco-friendly habits to work into everyday life. These nine simple resolutions can go hand in hand with other goals like saving money, prioritizing health and wellness, and being a responsible community member. Making a few easy adjustments to our typical routines can have a big impact on our communities, environment and the world around us.
Through our restoration projects, our team promotes a connection between people and the environment in The Bahamas. As part of this effort, Coral Researcher & PADI IDC Staff Instructor Natalia Hurtado taught the PADI open water course to 5 participants of an extracurricular mentorship program at The Island School called the Young Men’s Leadership Program (YMLP). One of the participants said after the course “What I liked most about the open water course was being given the opportunity to explore the ocean.”
The Island School community will sincerely miss Nehemiah Taylor as our local legendary fisherman. He was a good friend to many and shared his kindness, insight and passion with our students and staff over the years. Miah, as everyone called him, grew up in Little Creek, Andros, spent time in Nassau, but called Eleuthera home. He loved the sea and grew up from a young age fishing. Over the years he would come to campus and share his knowledge and enthusiasm with our students taking them out on the banks and teaching them how to dive up conch. He offered his insight into the steady and tragic decline of the conch fishery and other important fisheries. He enjoyed sharing his skills as a fisherman as well as his life stories and his culture.
At first glance, this coastal area appears to be nothing more than a mismanaged dumpsite that has been taken over by an invasive species known as Australian Pine (Casuarina equisetifolia). However, one of our interns has been conducting research in the area and found that there is more native diversity here than initially meets the eye. By understanding what plant species are persisting in this stressful environment, we can prioritize our restoration efforts to facilitate the growth of native coastal vegetation that protects our coastlines. The restoration of native plant biodiversity can be a tool to increase coastal resilience and protect coastal communities like ours, to adapt to a changing climate.
“We all have something to learn from each other. While learning more about the ecology of these animals is crucial for their conservation, really understanding the importance of the fishery in the community context is equally as important. Events like Crab Fest are a great way to better grasp the significance of these animals from the stakeholder perspective.”
Research scientists from the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) at The Island School recovered an underwater sea glider from the Atlantic Ocean. The sea glider is a torpedo-shaped autonomous drone that measures upper ocean characteristics, such as temperature and salinity levels. This data is to improve forecasting for tropical storms and hurricanes in the North Atlantic Ocean.
A spirit of camaraderie permeated the Cotton Bay Beach clean up as The Island School community including Deep Creek Middle School and Early Learning Center students and staff, research staff from the Cape Eleuthera Institute and Ben Dougherty, CEO and Head of Schools worked side by side to keep our beautiful beaches clean. Clean Beaches Eleuthera reported that as a result of our combined efforts, in just two hours, we removed 395 pounds of trash from Cotton Bay Beach.
In urbanized areas and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like The Bahamas, our communities are vulnerable to low or declining agriculture due to soil fertility and management practices, access to capital, and climate change. These factors contribute to local food insecurity and systems of food deserts. Nevertheless, mushroom cultivation provides a direct solution as they can be cultivated on readily available organic waste substrates such as cardboard and paper, spent coffee grounds, and wood chips.
Within the Caribbean region, cardboard accounts for about 20-30% of our municipal solid waste, and puts a strain on our landfill and dumpsite management due to its volume and lack…
The ultimate goal of this project is to take observational data of the upper ocean to improve hurricane forecasting in the North Atlantic Ocean. There are many partners throughout the Caribbean and North America working in collaboration with NOAA and the University of Miami on this regional project. The glider deployment with CEI is the first done in The Bahamas. This is really important work because The Bahamas is one of the most hurricane prone countries in the North Atlantic due to its location and proximity to Florida. This nation has historically been affected by the four different hurricane types, which develop in different areas in the North Atlantic basin.
We know it’s happening, but why so much conversation about climate change, and what does it mean for Eleuthera? You’ve probably noticed that the North Atlantic hurricane season has gotten considerably more intense since 2016. After Hurricane Matthew, there has been at least one Major Hurricane (categories 3 – 5) almost every year in The Bahamas. The proportion of Major Hurricanes in the Atlantic Hurricane Season will continue to increase because of climate change, a new area of research for the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) at The Island School.
A new crawfishing season has arrived, marking an important time in the life of our island. The Bahamas crawfish industry was certified as a sustainable fishery in 2018 by the Marine Stewardship Council, the only lobster fishery in the region to have this seal of approval. We should be proud of this achievement that came from years of hard work by government officials, the fisheries sector and non-profit organizations all working together.
CEI scientist Eric Schneider published a recent paper about fish aggregation devices. Schneider explains that many different species of fish that live in the open ocean spend a lot of their time close to floating objects. Because structure in the open ocean is very uncommon, floating objects like logs, seaweed patches, or lost buoys provide a combination of benefits to fish in this habitat. Floating debris can act as shelter for small fish, a meeting point for fish to reform schools that have been separated, or also as a navigational aid.
We were thrilled to welcome six apprentices into our community for our annual Summer Apprentice Program.
Not only do our apprentices receive training in a specific trade, they also participate in weekly seminar classes that provide background and essential information on career development including financial management, resume writing, and communication skills. In addition, through support from generous donors, apprentices also receive a stipend for their five-week work program. This year’s apprentices are working alongside our research staff, dining services, alumni and administrative teams, facilities, and research technicians.
We are proud to celebrate Alannah Vellacott F’08 as this year’s Founders Alumni Award recipient for the Cape Eleuthera Island School. Alannah is a Fall 2008 Semester Alumna, and a former Bahamas Environmental Steward Scholar. Alannah grew up in Grand Bahama, and arrived at Cape Eleuthera fully ready to take care of her ocean; she helped inspire our community and her peers as a student, and she continues to work with our research team as she pursues a career as a marine biologist.

The Perry Institute and CEI collaborate on ‘The Bahamas Coral Innovation Hub Project (BCIH)’, an initiative that aims to help reverse the decline of Bahamian reefs, with a focus on South Eleuthera. Island School Semester and Summer Term and Deep Creek Middle School students gained valuable hands-on coral restoration experience in an underwater classroom, working with PIMS researchers Natalia Hurtado and Casey Harris on various projects.

Why?
Because many corals and marine invertebrates spawn between May and October. And when the water is warmest in July, August and September, we can observe massive spawning in many corals, like star, brain and Acroporid species.
In celebration of Earth Month and as part of an ongoing project, the Deep Creek Middle School Eco Club worked with staff from The Island School’s Cape Eleuthera Institute to organize a community roadside cleanup. This was in an effort not only to improve the aesthetic of the area but also to both engender support for community recycling and waste management as well as to assess the key waste streams in the community.
After a brief pause in programming, we were thrilled to wrap up a successful Island School semester in May 2021. Fifty-two students completed the Spring 2021 Semester and joined a strong cohort of over 2,000 alumni prepared to become leaders effecting change. Semester Director Sam Kosoff shared some final remarks at graduation, and we were delighted to recognize three students for their notable contributions to the semester, within an impressive group of peers.

Founder Chris Maxey reflects on the passing of Sally Searle, whom he refers to as The Island School’s matriarch. Dear friends of the Maxeys and the organization, Sally and her late husband Bill’s generosity, steady council, and shared vision are intimately woven in our history and have helped create The Island School as it stands today.
On Sunday evening May 2nd, Sally Searle passed away peacefully in her magical home on the ridge in Cotton Bay, Eleuthera. She had been clear with many that this is the way she wanted to die, to be in Eleuthera, fishing on the sea and watching the osprey soar above her home across the vast Atlantic horizon. Yellow Bird, her home in Cotton Bay, was her querencia, and she loved the beauty of nature all around.

As we begin the first of two Summer Terms and look forward to the next year, I write to share with you our plans for continual improvement in the area of equity and belonging for all of our community members.
With our mission and core principles ever in mind, we continue to pursue our central question “How do we live well in a place?” and our goal to “Create an intentional community in which members are cognizant of their abilities, limitations, and effect on others.” Thank you to all those in our extended community who have shared valuable insight and feedback in this process.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020, Island School Outreach shifted programming as originally designed to respond to the needs of the community, particularly the students we serve. As schools went remote, we committed to providing remote tutoring and learning support for our program participants to encourage students to stay engaged with their academics.
Marine scientists have a hard time figuring out who eats who. On land, you can directly observe predation or study the scat that animals leave behind. In the ocean, it isn’t so simple. Fish poop immediately mixes with seawater and is difficult to collect, and fish often feed out of sight. Historically, scientists have turned to lethal methods like dissection and gut content analysis, or, for a non-lethal alternative, stomach lavage (essentially a stomach pump) to study fish diet. Over time, less invasive techniques have been developed.
When I was younger, hurricanes frequently struck our homes and destroyed so much. Growing up in Nassau, I witnessed the wreckage from Hurricane Michelle and Andrew as a little girl. When I went to college, Hurricane Irene followed me up to Connecticut and delayed my arrival. The following year, Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy ploughed over the US East Coast. I went from a childhood where I thought I understood how hurricanes behave to not understanding how they travelled so far up the US coast. These events pushed me to study how tropical cyclones function and develop, especially concerning the changing climate.
Last month, we held our third and final session of Schools Without Walls for the academic year. This week of experiential learning sees our Deep Creek Middle School students immerse themselves into other branches of the organization, which includes helping with research projects, working on our campus’s sustainability initiatives, and exploring iconic cultural and natural history sites across Eleuthera.
We’re thrilled to report some good news from our Coral Research team! It is always rewarding to see evidence of our research and strategies paying off to the benefit of the coral reefs we care about so deeply, as well as the long term health of our oceans. Over the next 100 years, factors causing climate change have the potential to increase sea surface temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius. However, even a small increase could have drastic effects on tropical areas due to the historical thermal stability of places such as the Caribbean. Recently, the Cape Eleuthera Institute has been focusing efforts on investigating how climate change may affect tropical fish species and the marine communities with which they interact. One specific project is using a swim tunnel to measure the aerobic scope of Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and Schoolmaster Snapper (Lutjanus apodus). A swim tunnel is a cylindrical tank in which a fish swims against a current and its oxygen consumption can be measured. Data obtained from the swim tunnel such as swimming velocity and respiration rate can then be used to calculate the fish’s aerobic scope. Aerobic scope, or the capacity for oxygendriven metabolism, is a good overall indicator for performance and can estimate how much energy a fish has to devote to essential behaviors such as foraging, predator evasion and reproduction. The water that flows through the swim tunnel can be slightly warmed to simulate future ocean conditions, and the fish’s response can be quantified. Through this study, CEI and the Flats Ecology and Conservation Program hope to gain insight on how different coral reef and mangrove…
